Beowulf
Running time 1 hour and 53 minutes

Rating: ★★★½☆

I am ripper. Tearer. Slasher. Teeth in the darkness. I am Beowulf! I saw Beowulf last night with my friend Becca, so here’s a simple review of the movie. This review may contain spoilers.

For those who do not know the basic plot is about Beowulf, who must defeat a monster by the name of Grendel who is terrorizing a town. After that he must also rid the area of Grendel’s mother who seeks out revenge. Of course there’s a bit more to the story, but that’s the basic gist of it. The movie is based off a story that tormented students in their English class, which honestly I don’t remember every detail of the original story.

Visually since the movie is done in CGI it’s amazing, breath taking back grounds that will leave the viewer in awe. Some sorts look a little awkward at times, especially when it comes to some of the characters but beyond that visually the film is amazing. Personally I think it would have been much better with real people, but oh well. Angelina Jolie herself made a comment about her CGI-character self basically stating even she doesn’t look that good (her character is naked with some massive boobs that look very odd).

Storyline wise the movie starts out kinda eh, Grendel’s screaming in the beginning of the film had myself and other audience members laughing. You’d have to hear it for yourself to understand. Anyways, the story picks up a lot more towards the end of the film and becomes a lot more interesting.

Overrall Beowulf is a nice PG-13 film but contains a lot of gore, but beyond that it’s a good film. There’s even a 3D version where you wear 3D glasses and watch the film … after seeing the regular version I can not imagine how freaky it would be to see the 3D version. I give the movie 3 1/2 stars out of 5, it wasn’t bad but could have been a lot better.

When showing the previews the clip they always — without fail — have playing is the one of Angelina Jolie dripping with gold. I still want to go and see it, however!

I first saw the TV advertisement a few days ago. It looks interesting! It’s in 3D? So I assume no real actors were in the film? Cool! :D Might watch this one :D

That’s what I thought. It looked like a cartoon so I was like WTF?! Now I know. I didn’t wanna see it to begin with because I hated learning it in school so I’m not gonna go sit through it to further my pain. LOL Maybe if I get bored enough I’ll rent it on DVD.

Man, I remember doing Beowulf for a drama class. :P Nordic mythology if I’m not mistaken??
It looks pretty nice for CG, but I didn’t expect them to base the characters off of real actors, haha.

I haven’t watched Beowulf yet, but I read it in English class. I don’t remember much about it either but it might make for a good watch! I’ll look it up online at movieforumz, lol.

Isn’t it an awesome movie? I watched it last night, and I loved it. I didn’t know it was animated though. Surprised me.

I want to see that movie (I was really into it when I read about it in Lit class back in 2004). I didn’t even bother reading your post because of spoilers. Nice blog though.

Indeed, the movie could have been better. I disliked the ending completely. It lacked closure and left things so up in the air. The CGI was wonderful and yes, very gory. I had to close my eyes for a lot of those parts. My only question is this though: the first king made Grendel, a hideous creature, but Beowulf made a beautiful dragon/non-hideous boy. How the hell did that happen?

I thought it looked kind of weird. I sort of enjoyed the story in English class a couple months ago. I am glad it is actually good. I still think it’s a little weird to have a cartoon with naked people but oh well. I might just have to see that movie now. I really love this layout by the way. It is so organized. It makes me really happy.

I saw Beowulf twice… in fact work in the Cinema that shows it, YOU must watch it in Real-D(new 3d tech) and you must sit front and center to get the best effect…If you can see the sides of the screen then you’ll ruin it for yourself… to much gore and nudity for a youth film, it was originally classified to be shown for older teens and young adults enough said…

I doubt seeing it in 3D will change my mind, I still think it was a nice film BUT could have been a hell of a lot better than it was. Key word it was originally classified, clearly it went beyond that one. To me it seemed like a lot of gore for a PG 13 film, compared to other PG 13 films that have been released prior. The gore and nudity itself didn’t bother me, but seeing a bunch of little kids shielding behind their parents and screaming bloody murder every time Grendel went on his little rampage in the beginning, it got old. Quickly.

I haven’t seen this movie yet, but I keep hearing alot of good reviews. I do want to see the movie in 3D just because I haven’t seen a movie in 3D in a long time.

Sounds interesting… but I don’t think it’s my type of film. The CGI is pretty good though, judging from the ads and all the posters plastered all over the cinemas.

I saw Beowulf. Thought it was the worst 1.5 hours of my life to date.
I’d have given it 1.5 stars.
